Abstract

Control of multi-drug resistant organisms (MROs) in hospitals requires a multifaceted risk management approach. Accident and emergency departments present additional challenges given the nature and unpredictability of the work. This presentation will discuss Australian approaches to MRO control in hospitals. It will explore the particular challenges faced by accident and emergency departments and strategies to control and prevention the spread infection. Four broad elements of infection prevention - biological, social, psychological and surveillance approaches as related to emergency departments, will be discussed in more detail.
