Abstract

This study addressed community perceptions of home-schooling as a viable educational option in New South Wales. The term home-schooling was used to cover three broad areas - Distance education, Other academic curricula, and natural learning (or unschooling), with the determining factor being that the student was educated at home rather than in a school. It was seen that enrolment with distance education is subject to certain conditions. The legal situation dealing with requirements for registration as a home-schooler in NSW has been subject to debate, however there were guidelines, given by the Office of the Board of Studies, that parents were expected to comply with in order to receive registration.
