Abstract
This article by Robert K. McIver and Neil Thompson examines data from the Global Adventist Pastors’ Survey to analyze the frequency and selection of sermon topics within Seventh-day Adventist churches. While core themes like the experience of salvation, the Second Coming, and stewardship are preached most frequently, the study reveals surprising gaps in coverage. Significant percentages of pastors reported not preaching on foundational Adventist doctrines—such as the Sabbath (4.6%), the Sanctuary (16%), and the Trinity (13%)—within a 12-month period. The authors acknowledge practical constraints, including limited annual speaking slots and the presence of guest speakers, but warn that the absence of "identity marker" topics poses a risk to denominational cohesion. To address these deficiencies, the article advocates for a deliberate preaching strategy to ensure that congregations receive a balanced and comprehensive spiritual diet that reinforces central Adventist beliefs.
