Abstract
As an author with a cultural insider’s understanding of the place of death in the Biafran world view, in her book The Sleepless, Nuzo Onoh situates this natural awareness within that which typifies every African rural community: ‘the whole psychic atmosphere of African village life is filled with belief in mystical power’ (Mbiti 1989: 197). Specifically, embedded in this ‘mystical belief ’, Sleepless was written as the result of a kaleidoscopic confluence of Onoh’s personal encounters with wartime death, genocide, traditional beliefs and the enduring legacies of colonial trauma.
