Opposing sides use the same passages of Scripture, demonstrating convincingly that there are more layers to this issue than many care to admit. The chapter explores some of these layers, including historical roots for current practice, a review of the biblical practice of installing leaders, and how various models of Church determine ministry functions. Finally, an evaluation of the reasons given to prevent modern women from following in their steps.
Item A Study of the Membership of the South Pacific Division(2016-01-01) Williams, Anthony; McIver, Rob; Morton, Lindsay; Petrie, Kevin; de Waal, Kayle; Tasker, David; Beamish, PeterItem Ancient Near Eastern Literature and the Hebrew Scriptures About the Fatherhood of God(2004-10-11) Tasker, DavidAncient Near Eastern Literature and the Hebrew Scriptures About the Fatherhood of God discusses some of the main father-god concepts of the people of the Ancient Near East, then examines the eighteen occurrences of God’s fatherhood specifically mentioned in Hebrew Scripture. From these sources, the book develops a theology of God’s fatherhood that honors both ancient and modern scrutiny. Although many studies have explored the subject of the fatherhood of God – mostly from the perspective of nonbiblical disciplines, and through the lens of Greco-Roman mythology – this book takes into account the wealth of material from the ancient Near East, the birthplace of the Hebrew Scriptures. Item Covenant in Blood: The Cross Foreshadowed in Gen. 15(2016-08-01) Tasker, DavidThis chapter asks what the death of Christ revealed about God and the way he relates to humanity. It also asks whether this death was an elaborate cosmic legal transaction, a demonstration of divine love, or a divine expression of divine solidarity with the human race. This chapter suggests that the account of a covenant ceremony in Gen. 15 offers insights into these questions.
Item Creator, Judge and King: God in the Heavenly Temple in the Psalms(2017-01-01) Tasker, DavidThe purpose of this chapter is to make a preliminary exploration of the Psalms to observe this rich spectrum of ideas on the heavenly sanctuary. The chapter is divided between two themes: God as King, and God as Judge. Underscoring these main themes are the subthemes of creation and worship. The first part will examine the passages about God being the eternal King enthroned in heaven. This will include his conquest over evil, his throne’s position in heaven instead of on earth, his holiness and his praise. The second part will examine the theme of God as Judge, first as the one presiding in the heavenly council, then his observance of events on earth – including the pleas for rescue from his subjects – and finally his decision to come in judgement to the earth.
In this endeavour only verses from the Psalms that refer to the heavenly palace/temple will be examined. To date there have been few studies on the theme of the heavenly temple imagery in the Psalms, so this chapter aims to offer an initiatory exploration of this fascinating topic.
Item Divine Fatherhood: Re-Examining the Paradigm(2008-01-01) Tasker, DavidThis article examines various approaches to the understanding of the father-God concept, recognizing that much that has been said up to this point has been influenced by sources other than either the Hebrew Scriptures or their Ancient Near Eastern (ANE) context.
Item Doing Right in Their Own Eyes: The Great Controversy Theme in the Book of Judges(2015-01-01) Tasker, DavidThe great controversy theme saturates the book of Judges. The historical context is portrayed as chaotic, in large measure due to the conflicting ethical views of people whose allegiance is either with Yahweh or Baal. Case studies of Deborah, Gideon and Samson illustrate the intensification of this struggle which ebbs and flows in unexpected ways.
Item Education in Ancient Israel: Across the Deadening Silence(1999-01-01) Tasker, DavidIn this groundbreaking new book, distinguished biblical scholar James L. Crenshaw investigates both the pragmatic hows and the philosophical whys of education in ancient Israel and its surroundings. Asking questions as basic as "Who were the teachers and students and from what segment of Israelite society did they come?" and "How did instructors interest young people in the things they had to say?" Crenshaw explores the institutions and practices of education in ancient Israel. The results are often surprising and more complicated than one would expect. Education, for the people who lived in the biblical world, was more than a simple matter of memorizing information and taking tests. It was a search for the hidden plan and presence of God. Knowledge was gained, according to biblical texts such as Ecclesiastes and Proverbs, not only by means of patient observation and listening, but through communication with Wisdom, the feminine incarnation of the Divine. Drawing upon a broad range of ancient sources, Crenshaw examines this religious dimension of education in ancient Israel, demonstrating how the practice of teaching and learning was transformed into the supreme act of worship.[from publisher website].

Item Rebellion and Redemption(2015-10-01) Tasker, David“Satan’s efforts to misrepresent the character of God, to cause men to cherish a false conception of the Creator, and thus to regard Him with fear and hate rather than with love; his endeavors to set aside the divine law, leading the people to think themselves free from its requirements: and his persecution of those who dare to resist his deceptions, have been steadfastly pursued in all ages. They may be traced in the history of patriarchs, prophets, and apostles, of martyrs and reformers.” –Ellen G. White, The Great Controversy, pp. 12, 13.
In answer to this tragedy, God, who had foreseen all this happening “before the foundation of the world” (Eph. 1:4), put in place His rescue plan. God has pledged to bear in Himself the full responsibility for all human rebellion and to suffer the consequences for every evil we have committed. Only in this way could God restore His relationship with the human race, relationships between humans, and humanity’s relationship with the rest of creation.
This is the story of Rebellion and Redemption.
Item Ruach Elohim: The Holy Spirit in the Old Testament(2013-01-01) Tasker, DavidWhat do the Hebrew Scriptures teach about the Holy Spirit? R. A. Torrey once wrote, “Before one can correctly understand the work of the Holy Spirit, he must first of all know the Spirit himself.” With this admonition in mind, my intention is to glean some insight from the Hebrew Scriptures to understand a little more of the Person of the Holy Spirit. In so doing, I will avoid imposing New Testament structures upon the Hebrew Scriptures, but let them speak for themselves.
Item The Challenge of Generational Change(2011-07-01) Tasker, DavidThe church has been rocked by many controversies. Too many people have been hurt in the crossfire. The question is, “are we able to learn from these and move on, or is it necessary to withdraw into the cocoon of some past golden age?”
Item The Fatherhood of God(2014-01-01) Tasker, DavidThe Christian religion, like every other religion, stands or falls by its conception of God, and to that the conception of God the idea of the Fatherhood of God is integral. How do we understand the concept of God? Where do we draw our ideas from?
Item The Gospel That Came to Abraham(2010-01-01) Tasker, DavidTrusting God to fulfill His promises, especially at a time of greatest discouragement, is an integral part of salvation. Why did Jesus die? Was it a demonstration of divine love, some cosmic legal transaction, human rejection of God, or something else? Or all of the above?

Item The People of God in Prophetic Literature(2007-01-01) Tasker, DavidThe author discusses the unfolding nature of God's covenant relationship with his people through successive prophets from the time before exile, right through to the time of restoration. In the process, three main interconnected concepts of the land, the temple and the people, are explored in relationship to God. It is when these concepts intersect that God's intimacy with his people can be seen.
Item The Spirit of God. Part 1(2014-04-01) Tasker, DavidIn the first part of this two-part series, the author focuses on the fact that the Holy Spirit is referred to more than 100 times in the Old Testament in a number of ways: the Spirit of God (Elohim); the Spirit of the Lord (YHWH); and simply, the Spirit.
