Item 2017 Global Church Member Survey – South Pacific Division(2017-01-01) Williams, Anthony; McIver, Rob; Morton, Lindsay; Petrie, Kevin; de Waal, Kayle; Tasker, David; Beamish, PeterItem A BÍblia e a Terra Plana(2020-05-01) de Waal, KayleThis article studies the supposed texts that teach that the earth is flat. After an examination of the biblical texts it the paper concludes that the Bible does not teach that the earth is flat or that it has a literal vault or dome or that there are pillars under the earth. The claims for a “flat earth” are made more on presupposition than responsible exegesis. Biblical truth must be grounded in the clear consistent teaching of Scripture that takes seriously the historical, literary, cultural and social context. A God-centred contextual reading of Scripture actually points to God’s indescribable power and sovereign control of the earth.

Item A Qualitative Analysis of Discipleship in the Seventh-day Adventist Church: Responses to a Global and Regional Survey(2016-09-01) de Waal, Kayle; Heise, Julie-Anne; Petrie, Kevin; Ferret, Rick; Morton, Lindsay; Hattingh, Sherry J.In 2014 the South Pacific Division1 (SPD) of the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church commissioned a research team from Avondale College of Higher Education to investigate the nature of discipleship. The aim of the research project was twofold: to provide an objective description of a Seventh-day Adventist disciple of Jesus, and to provide a criterion/criteria by which the attainment of discipleship may be measured and shared in the context of the Adventist Church’s mission. This paper reports on stage one of the project in which international and national church leaders were interviewed regarding their understanding of discipleship as articulated and applied at division, union, conference, and local levels. This qualitative data was then analyzed for common themes, areas for development, and contributions towards a description of a Seventh-day Adventist disciple. Five key findings emerged from stage one and are reported below, highlighting both strengths and weaknesses in the Church’s understandings of and approaches to discipleship.
Item A Sound Map of Revelation 8:7-12 and the Implications for Ancient Hearers(2018-11-06) de Waal, KayleA sound map of Rev. 8:7-12 is developed to uncover fresh meaning-making potential from this passage. Revelation 8:7-12 is acknowledged as a unit of text that symbolically depicts the blowing of the first four trumpets. The sound map will assist in identifying the organic structure of this unit of text in the wider trumpet series and minimize the complexity of understanding the imagery. The research unfolds from the perspective of the ancient hearers. The sound map highlights significant words and phrases from an aural perspective that assist the interpreter in the exegetical endeavour.

Item An Aural-Performance Analysis of Revelation 1 and 11(2015-01-01) de Waal, KayleThis book breaks fresh ground in the interpretation of the Apocalypse with an interdisciplinary methodology called aural-performance criticism that assesses how the first-century audience would have heard the Apocalypse. First-century media culture is probed by assessing the dynamics of literacy, orality, aurality, and performance in the Gospels, parts of the Pauline corpus, and also Jewish apocalyptic literature. The audience constructs of informed, minimal, and competent assist the interpreter to apply the methodology. Sound maps and an aural-performance commentary of Revelation 1 and 11 are developed that analyze aural markers, sound style, identity markers, repetition, themes, and the appropriation of the message by the audience. The book concludes by examining the sociological, theological, and communal aspects of aurality and performance and its implications for interpreting the Apocalypse.

Item Ancient Words, Present Hope: What the Old Testament Teaches us about Revelation(2015-01-01) de Waal, KayleWhen John the Revelator read the scriptures to learn about Jesus and God’s plan for our world, he read what we know as the Old Testament. So when he tried to understand and explain the visions he received on the island of Patmos in his letter to the first-century church, it was natural that he would use its references, symbols and ideas.
As such, the Old Testament offers valuable resources for our understanding of the Book of Revelation as 21st-century readers, particularly as it points us anew to Jesus— Revelation’s victorious Lamb and coming King.

Item Designing an Innovative System to Evaluate a Postgraduate Supervision Support and Development Framework(2016-04-01) Carton, Janet; Williams, Anthony; Northcote, Maria T.; Mitchell, Brett G.; de Waal, Kayle; Anderson, Malcolm; Petrie, KevinThe supervision of a doctoral student engages the supervisor/s and the candidate in a professional learning and teaching relationship, described by some as the pedagogy of supervision (Grant, 2005; Nulty, Kiley, & Meyer, 2009). In the past few decades, many universities have developed ‘supervisor training’ programs and other innovations to support supervisors. These programs are designed to cultivate the necessary knowledge and skills to support academic and research staff to supervise postgraduate student(s) (Carton & Kelly, 2014; Carton, O’Farrell, & Kelly, 2013; Luca et al., 2013). As part of a project that was funded by an Office for Learning and Teaching (OLT) Extension Grant, such a Framework was recently designed and implemented at Avondale College of Higher Education, a small higher education institution in the early phases of postgraduate program development (Petrie et al., 2015). The effectiveness of such initiatives is often difficult to measure in small institutions such as Avondale; the relatively small number of students and supervisors does not always provide the breadth of feedback necessary to evaluate success using traditionally employed evaluation methods. This paper reports on the innovative evaluation system developed as part of this project, using the pedagogy of supervision as a frame of reference to evaluate the Framework. This evaluation process is being undertaken using a design-based research methodology (Anderson & Shattuck, 2012) which has guided the construction of evaluation criteria and metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of Avondale's Research Training Support Framework. The developed evaluation method and its initial findings will be reported in this paper.

Item Hearing the Way: What the First Christians Heard in the Story of Jesus(2019-11-01) de Waal, KayleThis book examines the theme of ‘way’ as it emerges in the book of Isaiah and is developed in the New Testament. The notion of ‘way’ points to the richness of meaning early Christians found in the death and resurrection of Jesus.
