Item Discovering a New Voice(2012-04-01) Morton, LindsayItem Education in Ancient Israel: Across the Deadening Silence(1999-01-01) Tasker, DavidIn this groundbreaking new book, distinguished biblical scholar James L. Crenshaw investigates both the pragmatic hows and the philosophical whys of education in ancient Israel and its surroundings. Asking questions as basic as "Who were the teachers and students and from what segment of Israelite society did they come?" and "How did instructors interest young people in the things they had to say?" Crenshaw explores the institutions and practices of education in ancient Israel. The results are often surprising and more complicated than one would expect. Education, for the people who lived in the biblical world, was more than a simple matter of memorizing information and taking tests. It was a search for the hidden plan and presence of God. Knowledge was gained, according to biblical texts such as Ecclesiastes and Proverbs, not only by means of patient observation and listening, but through communication with Wisdom, the feminine incarnation of the Divine. Drawing upon a broad range of ancient sources, Crenshaw examines this religious dimension of education in ancient Israel, demonstrating how the practice of teaching and learning was transformed into the supreme act of worship.[from publisher website].

Item Review of Saints and Sinners: A History of the Popes(1999-04-01) Jankiewicz, DariusPublication Stories from Sunnyside: Ellen White in Australia 1891-1900(Avondale Academic Press, 2017-11-01) Knight, SoniaI’d never been to “Sunnyside” until a few weeks ago. So, the opportunity to tour Ellen White’s Australian home excited me. As a guide ushered our large group through the historic building, I saw not only the room where the Seventh-day Adventist Church pioneer wrote a large proportion of her writings, including The Desire of Ages, but also other items she’d used in the running of her household. Our guide interspersed historical facts with interesting snippets and captivating stories of everyday life.
Item The Birth of Christianity: Discovering What Happened in the Years Immediately after the Execution of Jesus(2000-01-01) McIver, RobertThis book is about the lost years of earliest Christianity, about the 30s and 40s of the first century, about those dark decades immediately after the execution of Jesus. It is a silence similar to that in Jesus’ own life. Where did Jesus go, it is sometimes asked, in those decades before he emerged to public life as a follower of John the Baptist? He went, it is sometimes answered, to India and learned wisdom. I no more believe that story than that he went to Ireland and learned Gaelic. Be that as it may, there is, for earliest Jesus and earliest Christianity, a parallel period of emptied years and darkened decades. But it is also more surprising to have such lost years for a social movement than for an individual person. It is not at all unusual that the ancient record of a personal life should begin at full maturity. [from author website].
