Abstract

Beneath a Shy Moon is situated within the lineage of Western artistic practices of assemblage and abstract painting. In particular, the work draws on the legacy of Rosalie Gascoigne’s two-dimensional assemblages, which reconfigure found materials—such as reflective plywood road signage—into ordered visual systems through processes of deconstruction and re-composition. This approach informs a broader methodological framework in which material specificity and spatial reconfiguration are central.

The work also engages with contemporary painting practices such as those of Tomma Abts, whose materially driven works resist fixed categorisation as either abstract or figurative, instead operating as “concrete” visual experiences. These precedents underpin the conceptual and formal strategies employed in Beneath a Shy Moon, particularly in its negotiation of materiality, structure, and perceptual ambiguity.
