avondale-bepress-to-dspace.summary |
Research Background: There is ongoing fascination, interests and publications in relation to how visual artists make their work and the impact/influence of their working spaces. The book 'Inside the Painter's Studio' by Joe Fig, for instance, collects twenty-four artist interviews, as well as exclusive visual documentation of their studios. Similarly, Gosford Regional Gallery curator, Josh White selected 23 central coast artists, the photographer Helene Rosanove interviewed and photographed their studio spaces. Josh White selected a work from each artist.

Research Contribution: Through the display of the researcher's edited interview, alongside the painted self-portrait of the researcher, and the large photograph (1.8m x 1m) of the researcher's studio space, significant contribution to the exhibition 'Room for Art: artists and their creative spaces' was facilitated. The exhibition enabled a diverse cross-section of working approaches by 23 artists to allow consideration of the impact of environment, or how practice research and individuality shapes the working creative environment.

Research Significance: While the notion of documenting and displaying how individual personality shapes environment, or practicalities of studio space shape work production, is not unique this research was unique to this location and area of the Central coast - bringing together, as it did, comparisons over 23 artists. It allowed the Andy Collis as researcher the consideration and insight into contemporary practices of his peers from his immediate locale.
| |
