avondale-bepress-to-dspace.summary
Research Background

The idea of a historical, global religious consciousness has been previously been explored in young adult dystopic literature and the marketplace existed for teen fiction to explore the historical belief systems of the ancient world whilst still exploring the more widely acknowledged popular themes of social and political agency.

Research Contribution

Afterworld addresses the ways in which the past, in this case our religious and spiritual beliefs (from the ancient mythological eras to that of recent Christianity and the New Age), influences our reality. The novel has been praised by publishers for exploring spirituality in a genre that usually ignores it and allowing power to be linked in YA fiction with an understanding of global consciousness.

Research Significance

Afterworld has been through a rigorously reader, editor, publisher and marketing study to establish its viability in the marketplace. It is represented as a piece of intellectual property by an agent (Foreign Rights Agency), a film rights manager (Spectrum Films) and published by Australia’s largest publisher and 2014 Publisher of the Year (Allen & Unwin). It has been reviewed by dozens of popular magazines and distributed nationally both in independent (Beurkelouew Books) and chain bookstores (Dymocks/Angus and Robertson) and retail stores (Big W). It is available online as an ebook through Amazon Kindle. It has selected by several schools for study.

avondale-bepress.abstract
Dom is the youngest person ever to arrive in the Necropolis, the 'waiting place' between death and what comes after. And it isn't long before he catches the attention of Satarial, a cruel Nephilim from the beginning of time, who has grim plans to use Dom as entertainment in his vicious gladiatorial games. When Dom's still-living sister, Kaide, appears in the Necropolis too, Satarial has the leverage he needs, and the stage is set for the biggest shake-up the afterlife has seen in centuries. Dom's only option is to compete in the Trials and attempt to win the chance to enter the Maze. In his favour he has an enigmatic young Guide, Eva, and a Guardian, Eduardo, who may not be what he seems. But will they be enough?
