Item 2017 Global Church Member Survey – South Pacific Division(2017-01-01) Williams, Anthony; McIver, Rob; Morton, Lindsay; Petrie, Kevin; de Waal, Kayle; Tasker, David; Beamish, PeterItem A Qualitative Analysis of Discipleship in the Seventh-day Adventist Church: Responses to a Global and Regional Survey(2016-09-01) de Waal, Kayle; Heise, Julie-Anne; Petrie, Kevin; Ferret, Rick; Morton, Lindsay; Hattingh, Sherry J.In 2014 the South Pacific Division1 (SPD) of the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church commissioned a research team from Avondale College of Higher Education to investigate the nature of discipleship. The aim of the research project was twofold: to provide an objective description of a Seventh-day Adventist disciple of Jesus, and to provide a criterion/criteria by which the attainment of discipleship may be measured and shared in the context of the Adventist Church’s mission. This paper reports on stage one of the project in which international and national church leaders were interviewed regarding their understanding of discipleship as articulated and applied at division, union, conference, and local levels. This qualitative data was then analyzed for common themes, areas for development, and contributions towards a description of a Seventh-day Adventist disciple. Five key findings emerged from stage one and are reported below, highlighting both strengths and weaknesses in the Church’s understandings of and approaches to discipleship.

In the past few decades, many universities have developed ‘supervisor training’ programs and other innovations to support supervisors. These programs are designed to cultivate the necessary knowledge and skills to support academic and research staff to supervise postgraduate student(s) (Carton & Kelly, 2014; Carton, O’Farrell, & Kelly, 2013; Luca et al., 2013). As part of a project that was funded by an Office for Learning and Teaching (OLT) Extension Grant, such a Framework was recently designed and implemented at Avondale College of Higher Education, a small higher education institution in the early phases of postgraduate program development (Petrie et al., 2015). The effectiveness of such initiatives is often difficult to measure in small institutions such as Avondale; the relatively small number of students and supervisors does not always provide the breadth of feedback necessary to evaluate success using traditionally employed evaluation methods. This paper reports on the innovative evaluation system developed as part of this project, using the pedagogy of supervision as a frame of reference to evaluate the Framework. This evaluation process is being undertaken using a design-based research methodology (Anderson & Shattuck, 2012) which has guided the construction of evaluation criteria and metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of Avondale's Research Training Support Framework. The developed evaluation method and its initial findings will be reported in this paper.

It looks at existing frameworks for the development of such a tool, studies that have been undertaken in the past, the current study undertaken, and how such a study can be analysed for future advancements in the development of a discipleship measurement tool.
Item Faith Engagement at School(2019-12-01) Zullig, Keith; Allen, Allyson; Lindsay, Peter; McClintock, David; Marsters, Gary; Petrie, KevinThe ability of teachers to engage and develop the faith journey of students is seen as a central endeavour in faith-based schools. Much has been written in the literature regarding approaches that may be effective in facilitating this process. This study analysed qualitative data collected from 368 Year 5–12 students from one faith-based school in Australia. Students reported on the key areas they believe assist in developing their faith, in addition to aspects they believe could be improved in this regard. A significant difference was found between the attitudes of those who reported not having a faith background and those who did. This chapter builds onto findings reported in the previous chapter.

Item Integrating the Scholarship of Teaching, Learning and Assessment into One Institution’s Homegrown Professional Learning Resources(2018-12-01) Hattingh, Sherry J.; Seddon, Jack; Petrie, Kevin; Williams, Anthony; Northcote, Maria T.Many professional learning (PL) programs in universities aspire to support tertiary educators to perform duties associated with teaching, student learning and assessment. Additionally, because much of a university academic’s work is associated with conducting scholarly research and supervising students’ research, PL programs also need to provide support associated with supervision and research activities. Faced with these multiple PL demands, one small Australian higher education institution developed a suite of resources to support faculty teaching staff and researchers in their professional capacities using a heuristic (self-determined) approach to resource development. The content of the resources drew on the principles of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) and a participatory research methodology was adopted to develop the resources. This paper outlines almost a decade of scholarly work that has resulted in the construction of a collection of PL resources which have been developed to improve the quality of the institution’s SoTL and research.
Item Integration of Faith and Learning Avondale Students’ Perceptions of how they Believe Faith and Learning is Integrated at College(2018-01-01) Hattingh, Sherene J.; Heise, Julie-Anne; Fitzsimmons, Phil; Petrie, KevinItem Investigating the Reasons why Missionaries Return Home Early. Project 1: development of an International Service Employees’ (ISE) Permanent Return (PR) Survey that will investigate reasons of early PR of some missionaries to their home divisions Project 2: focus group (FG) research on why ISE from NAD apply for PR and leave their mission fields after relatively short term of their mission experience(2018-01-01) Tasker, David; Race, Paul; Morton, Jason; Williams, Anthony; Petrie, KevinItem Professional Development of Research Supervisors: A Capacity-Building, Participatory Framework(2015-01-01) de Waal, Kayle; Anderson, Malcolm; Northcote, Maria T.; Mitchell, Brett G.; Williams, Anthony; Lemke, Gina; Petrie, KevinThe professional development of supervisors of higher degree research students is growing in importance and undergoing change, based on the demand for timely completion of higher degrees and the Australian federal government’s quality agenda driving improvement of practice. Research has informed the design of research supervision frameworks within large universities (Carton & Kelly, 2014; Luca et al., 2013) but smaller institutions face different issues, including the challenge of developing an active research culture.
This paper reports on the outcomes of an institution-wide project that was conducted in a small, private higher education institution involving the development and implementation of a framework for research supervision. The theoretical framework of the project drew on the pedagogical principles of research education (Kiley, 2009; Kiley & Wisker, 2009; Willison, 2010) and the project's methodological design adopted a utilisation-focused evaluation approach. By using a participatory research methodology, the perspectives of academic and administration staff, and higher degree students were gathered. Guidance was also sought from national and international experts in research supervision.
This paper outlines the research approach used and the framework that was developed, and reports on the issues raised during the initiative including insights into the success factors in changing culture.
Item Rights, Responsibilities and School Climate(2014-01-01) Petrie, KevinThis study investigates the impact of a Rights & Responsibilities program on school climate. Data were collected from 604 students in 59 regular grade 5-6 classrooms, within 20 state schools in Victoria, Australia. A significant positive relationship was found between the implementation of a rights and responsibilities program and increased measures of positive school climate. Implications for classroom teachers and school administrators are discussed. The importance of a Rights & Responsibilities program on student involvement, student-teacher relationships and belonging/connectedness is emphasised.
Item Role-Playing: A Smorgasbord of Learning Types(2015-12-01) de Berg, Kevin C.; Long, Warrick R.; Petrie, Kevin; Hinze, Jason; Kilgour, Peter W.One tertiary institution sought to research the perceptions that tertiary students have of role-plays as a means of learning. Role-plays were used across a range of disciplines at that institution including: teacher training, business and chemistry. Each of these disciplines used a role-play in their classes and then collected opinions from the students on the usefulness of the activity. It was discovered that students value role-plays as a means to challenge preconceived ideas, encourage creative thinking, assist students in applying theory to practice, make lessons fun and provide active learning experiences that increase student learning and engagement.
